What is Bruxism and TMJ?

Bruxism (teeth grinding) and TMJ disorder (TMD) are common causes of chronic jaw pain, tension headaches, and damaged teeth. Left untreated, they can lead to long-term issues such as jaw misalignment, ear pain, and sleep disruption.

Bruxism involves involuntary clenching, grinding or gnashing of the teeth, typically without the person knowing it. Bruxism happens when you are awake and can place extreme pressure on your teeth. Prolonged teeth grinding or jaw clenching can lead to cracked or broken teeth, broken crowns and fillings, increased risk of gum problems, and greater stress on your jaw joints and muscle (source: Canadian Dental Association: Jaw Clenching and Teeth Grinding).

It's important to look for early signs and symptoms of bruxism to avoid impacting your oral and overall health. Risks such as:

  • Aching teeth and jaw, especially when you first wake up and are eating breakfast
  • Facial pain or stiffness in the muscles, especially when first waking up
  • headaches
  • Earaches
  • Fractured teeth, teeth sensitivities, and/or the feeling of loose teeth
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold drinks or foods

Frequently Asked Questions

Feel Free to Call or Message with any Further Questions! We are Happy to Answer Any You May Have

Underlying causes of teeth grinding or clenching can be aggravated by elevated stress or anxiety levels. It is therefore important to be aware of potential triggers. An overall management approach, involving other health professionals, such as physiotherapists or psychologists, might also be needed to identify causes and lessen symptoms (source: Canadian Dental Association).

  • Anxiety and/or stress
  • Interrupted sleep
  • Crooked, misaligned and/or missing teeth

TMJ is the temporomandibular joint, also known as the "jaw". TMD is TMJ Disorder or "problems with muscle, bone or other tissue". Diseases such as arthritis contribute to TMDs and also, "partial or full dentures that are not the right fit and certain habits such as fingernail biting and pen or pencil biting." A dentist is best to assist with a treatment plan for TMDs.

At Suffuse Wellness, the use of neuromodulators (Botox, Xeomin, or Dysport) is used to relax muscles that are causing pain in collaboration with education to the client about stress management, dental care options, and health options. Our Community Partners are here to help with options and doors open to support you in all the ways that are needed to best manage and prevent further chronic pain issues. You are not alone in living with pain. There are options and we want to help.

Call us for a free Discovery Session today to see what options are available to you.

Great question! Bring a list of your medications and any questions you may have. If treatment is something you are ready for the day of your appointment, it is important not to have any antibiotics, vaccines or dental work within 2 weeks of the appointment. Neuromodulators are not safe for pregnant or breast feeding persons. It is best to stop any blood thinning medications or supplements 3-5 days prior, if safe to do so. Please feel free to ask any questions when you call to make your appointment.

Be well and keep smiling
